Yevgeny Poddubny, born in Belgorod in 1983, has been a special correspondent for the state channels Russia-24 and Russia-1 since 2011, covering Georgia, Syria and Ukraine. He was wounded by a Ukrainian loitering munition during the 2024 Kursk incursion and was made a Hero of the Russian Federation that December. Britain and Australia sanctioned him in May 2022.

Why they matter

Poddubny is state television’s principal war correspondent, so his broadcasts are the closest thing to an official Russian account of drone and strike operations. He is also a documented case of a reporter’s own footage giving away a position — a recurring hazard of the war’s filming culture.

Yevgeny Poddubny was born in Belgorod in August 1983 and holds a master’s degree in psychology from Belgorod State University. He speaks English and Arabic, and has been a special correspondent for the state channels Russia-24 and Russia-1 since 2011, covering Georgia, Syria and Ukraine.

His Telegram channel carries around 570,000 subscribers. He holds the medal for participation in the Syrian operation (2016) and the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” (2017), and in December 2024 he was made a Hero of the Russian Federation. The United Kingdom sanctioned him on 4 May 2022 and Australia on 18 May 2022, both over the spreading of disinformation about the invasion.

Two episodes are worth recording for what they say about the war rather than about him. In May 2022 his own broadcast material was reported to have helped Ukrainian forces locate and destroy Russian equipment — an illustration of how thoroughly geolocatable modern war footage is. And in August 2024 he was wounded when his vehicle was struck by a Ukrainian loitering munition during the Kursk incursion, which is a fair summary of what has happened to the safety of rear areas.
