Profile

Semyon Pegov, born in Smolensk in 1985, moved from regional television into war reporting via Abkhazia in 2008 and the Kremlin-linked LifeNews in 2014. Since 2017 he has headed WarGonzo, one of Russia’s most-followed war reporting projects. He was wounded by an anti-personnel mine in Donetsk and was awarded the Order of Courage by presidential decree.

Why they matter

Pegov reports from forward positions rather than commenting from a desk, so WarGonzo output often carries first-hand footage of drone and counter-drone operations. That access is what gives the material value and what makes its framing worth reading carefully.

Semyon Pegov was born in Smolensk in September 1985 and studied philology at Smolensk State University. He worked as a television journalist for the state broadcaster VGTRK in Smolensk from 2006 to 2008, then went to Abkhazia during the Russo-Georgian war of 2008. In 2014 he covered the war in Ukraine for the Kremlin-linked LifeNews, and in 2017, after that outlet closed, he took over WarGonzo , a project owned by the media businessman Aram Gabrelianov.

WarGonzo now carries around 750,000 Telegram subscribers. Pegov has reported from Nagorno-Karabakh as well as Ukraine, and was wounded by an anti-personnel mine in Donetsk. President Putin signed a decree awarding him the Order of Courage, which the Kremlin press service said recognised “courage in the performance of professional duty”.

He is listed in Ukraine’s sanctions register of propagandists.

What distinguishes WarGonzo from the larger commentary channels is that Pegov is usually where the footage is filmed. For a site tracking how drones are actually used, that first-hand material is the useful part; the narration around it is a separate question, and this site’s register grades the channel C and reads it as front-line access rather than analysis.
