Ben Buchanan

Political scientist working at the intersection of cyber, AI, and national security. Former Director of the CyberAI Project at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET). Served as Special Advisor for Artificial Intelligence in the Biden White House from 2021. With co-author Andrew Imbrie wrote The New Fire: War, Peace, and Democracy in the Age of AI (2022), an MIT Press study of how AI is reshaping the security competition between democracies and autocracies.

One of the few academics whose framing of AI risk made it directly into US executive-branch policy; his work on offensive cyber operations is the standard reference in the field.
