ZALA Z-16 is a short-range reconnaissance drone built by ZALA Aero Group, the Izhevsk-based subsidiary of the Kalashnikov Concern that supplies most of the Russian military’s small fixed-wing surveillance fleet. It replaces the older 421-16 line and entered Russian service in the lead-up to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, where it now flies as the spotter of the “Lancet reconnaissance-strike complex” — the pairing of a Z-16 overhead and a Lancet-3 loitering munition on call that Russian channels have made the signature strike pattern of the war in the east.

The airframe is a pusher-prop fixed-wing launched from a pneumatic rail and recovered under a parachute cushioned by an airbag. ZALA quotes a 12 kg maximum take-off weight, around 3.5 hours of endurance, an electric powerplant, a 50 km operational radius and a service ceiling of 5,000 m, with normal working altitudes between 500 and 1,500 m. The published spec of around four to six hours of endurance that circulates in Russian industry press appears to reference a different configuration; the manufacturer’s own page is more conservative. The modular payload set is the point of the aircraft: Z-16VHD60 HD day cameras with 60× zoom, the Z-16VHD20-IRA combined EO/IR gimbal, the Z-16IRQ-V/L thermal unit with an onboard laser designator, high-resolution still-camera pods, a multispectral agricultural sensor, a methane gas analyser and a gamma dosimeter — the same civilian catalogue that masks the system’s wartime role. ZALA also lists signal-relay and jam-resistant command-link options; combat footage posted by the manufacturer suggests the Z-16 is being used as a relay node for other ZALA systems as often as a shooter’s eye.

Russia is the only confirmed operator. ZALA’s own clip archive — released almost daily through 2026 under titles like “Z-16: key episodes of reconnaissance and objective control” — shows the drone over Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Chernihiv oblasts, cueing Tornado-S rocket strikes and Lancet runs on Ukrainian artillery, pontoon crossings and armour. Russian milblogger channels credit Z-16 overwatch for the targeting of a Ukrainian M109 Paladin near Druzhkivka and a French Caesar howitzer during an attempted evacuation; those claims are the manufacturer’s own and should be read as such. Ukrainian air defence has downed Z-16s regularly enough that wreckage photos circulate on both sides.

The Z-16Э is the export designation and the version ZALA advertises publicly, though no foreign operator has been identified; the type’s economic life is tied to Russian military demand and to the sanctions regime that reaches most of its sensor suppliers.
