The Skydio X2 is a folding enterprise quadrotor developed by Skydio, a San Mateo, California-based manufacturer founded in 2014. Introduced in 2021, the system is designed for infrastructure inspection, public safety, and tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The drone is built to exceed the U.S. Army’s Short-Range Reconnaissance (SRR) requirements and is manufactured in the United States to comply with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The company states that 22,000 of its drones are already in use by the U.S. military.

The X2 relies on Skydio Autonomy Enterprise, an AI-driven flight engine that provides 360-degree obstacle avoidance, autonomous tracking, and GPS-denied navigation. The system is equipped with a dual-sensor payload consisting of a color camera and an optional FLIR thermal sensor. An optional add-on, Skydio 3D Scan, automates data capture to generate high-resolution 3D models. The drone features a wireless range of up to 6.2 miles (10 km) and an average flight endurance of 35 minutes. The X2D variant, launched in May 2023, adds multiband technology to operate across multiple frequencies, allowing it to overcome interference and comply with spectrum management regulations in different countries. The system uses AES-256 wireless encryption for cybersecurity. Maintenance guidelines indicate that the drone has a lifespan of 1,000 flight hours, with propellers recommended for replacement after 100 hours and batteries after 200 cycles or one year.

The United States is the primary operator of the Skydio X2. The system is deployed across various government agencies, including emergency services, search and rescue, and national security sectors. Skydio’s marketing materials highlight its use in border security, base security, and crime scene reconstruction. The company reports that its drones are trusted by leading enterprise and government customers globally, with the X2D specifically developed in collaboration with domestic and international defense customers to enhance versatility in contested environments.

Skydio has iterated on the X2 platform with the introduction of the X2D Multiband, which enhances operational flexibility through its ability to toggle between frequency bands. The company also offers the Skydio Dock for the X2/S2+, enabling automated charging and data offloading. While the X2 is primarily marketed for industrial and public safety applications, its ruggedized design and NDAA compliance have facilitated its adoption in military and tactical roles. The system competes in the broader market of autonomous reconnaissance drones, distinguishing itself through its proprietary AI obstacle avoidance and domestic manufacturing pedigree.
