The SkyStriker is a tactical loitering munition developed by Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense contractor. Introduced in 2017, the system is designed to provide maneuverable troops and special forces with direct-fire aerial precision capabilities. It functions as a fully autonomous platform capable of locating, acquiring, and striking operator-designated high-value targets. The munition is distinguished by its electric propulsion system, which provides a low acoustic signature, allowing for covert operations at low altitudes. This silent approach is intended to offer a surprise advantage on the modern battlefield, enabling the system to act as an “invisible” attacker.

Technically, the SkyStriker is built around an advanced gimbaled dual CCD and infrared (IR) seeker with a synchronized dual tracker. This sensor suite allows the system to identify targets with high precision. The munition carries a warhead of either 5 or 10 kilograms, housed inside the fuselage. Its electric motor enables an endurance of more than two hours and a range exceeding 200 kilometers. The system features abort, go-around, and re-engage capabilities, providing flexibility during mission execution. An optional recovery capability is also available, though the primary design focus is on precision strike. The platform is highly mobile, capable of being launched from land vehicles, naval vessels, containerized systems, and aircraft, including the EuroPULS rocket launcher. This multi-domain launch capability enhances its operational flexibility across various combat environments.

The SkyStriker has seen significant international adoption, particularly in Europe. In September 2023, Elbit Systems announced a contract valued at $95 million to supply “several hundred” examples of the munition to an undisclosed European customer. This deal highlighted the growing demand for cost-effective, precise loitering munitions in the region. Further expanding its European footprint, Elbit Systems and German defense firm Diehl Defence announced a strategic partnership at the ILA Air Show in Berlin. The agreement aims to offer the SkyStriker to the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr. The partnership includes plans for local manufacturing, assembly, integration, and qualification activities at Diehl Defence’s facilities, supporting Germany’s sovereign defense capabilities. This move aligns with Germany’s objectives to enhance its autonomous precision-strike and reconnaissance capabilities while strengthening its domestic defense industry.

The system’s development reflects a broader shift in military doctrine toward autonomous, precision-strike assets that can operate in contested environments. By combining long-range loitering capabilities with a low signature, the SkyStriker addresses the need for tactical units to engage targets without exposing themselves to direct fire. The optional recovery feature adds a layer of cost-efficiency, allowing for the retrieval of the system if the target is not engaged. As defense ministries across Europe seek to modernize their arsenals and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains for critical technologies, partnerships like the one between Elbit and Diehl Defence are becoming increasingly common. The SkyStriker’s modular design and multi-platform launch options position it as a versatile solution for a variety of tactical scenarios, from counter-insurgency to conventional warfare.
