The Aptomar SECurus is a maritime electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensor station designed for coastal and vessel-based domain awareness. Manufactured by the Norwegian defense and security firm Norbit, the system entered service in 2010 as part of the company’s broader Aptomar surveillance portfolio. It is engineered to provide stabilized, long-range visual surveillance in demanding maritime environments, supporting operations ranging from port monitoring to critical infrastructure protection.

The SECurus integrates high-resolution daylight cameras with thermal imaging sensors to maintain visual awareness across varying light and weather conditions. A key technical feature is its six-degree-of-freedom stabilization system, which counteracts the motion of ships or coastal installations to ensure clear imaging. The unit includes a powerful xenon searchlight to enhance identification capabilities during nighttime operations. The system is built for rugged serviceability and is fully integrated with the SeaCOP Core Platform, a unified operational environment that combines data from radar, EO/IR, and AIS sensors into a single operational picture. This integration allows operators to verify activities, track targets, and coordinate responses within a shared workflow.

Norway and the United Kingdom are among the operators of the SECurus system. In the UK, the system has been utilized by the Coast Guard for maritime operations, where it supports surveillance and incident verification. The system is deployed in various roles, including coastal surveillance, offshore monitoring, and environmental monitoring support. While specific deployment counts are not publicly disclosed, the system is marketed as a solution for organizations requiring stronger maritime situational awareness and the ability to interpret activity visually.

The SECurus is part of Norbit’s strategy to offer integrated surveillance solutions that go beyond simple detection. By embedding visual awareness into the SeaCOP platform, the system aims to reduce fragmentation in maritime operations, allowing for faster decision-making and coordinated response. The system is designed to work in conjunction with other sensors, such as the SECurus’s companion radar systems, to provide comprehensive domain awareness.

As maritime security challenges evolve, the SECurus remains a component of Norbit’s focus on providing tailored connectivity and surveillance solutions. Its integration with the SeaCOP platform highlights a shift toward unified operational pictures in maritime defense, where data from multiple sources is synthesized to support mission-critical use. The system’s continued use by state actors like the UK Coast Guard underscores its role in modern maritime domain awareness.
