Sea Viper is the Royal Navy designation for the UK configuration of the Principal Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS), the area-air-defence suite fitted to the six Type 45 “Daring”-class destroyers that entered fleet service between 2010 and 2013. Developed by MBDA with the UK Sampson radar supplied by BAE Systems , the system is the British contribution to a trilateral programme shared with France and Italy, both of which field a Thales-radar variant on their Horizon-class frigates and FREMM multi-mission vessels. Its remit is task-group air defence: shielding a formation from saturation attacks by aircraft, sea-skimming cruise missiles, and — in later blocks — tactical ballistic threats.

At the heart of the UK installation is Sampson, a dual-face active electronically scanned array mounted atop the destroyer’s pyramidal mast. Rotating slowly to give continuous 360-degree coverage, Sampson tracks air targets past 400 kilometres according to BAE Systems and cues the S1850M long-range volume search radar built by BAE Systems and Airbus. The engagement rounds are MBDA’s Aster family: Aster 15 for close-in threats out to roughly 30 kilometres, and Aster 30 for longer engagements the manufacturer says reach beyond 100 kilometres. Both share a common terminal “dart” that combines aerodynamic control with lateral thrust vectoring — MBDA’s “PIF-PAF” system — allowing very-high-g manoeuvres in the final second of intercept. Missiles are cold-launched from Sylver A50 vertical cells and command-guided by Sampson before switching to onboard active radar for terminal homing, with the combat management system built around BAE Systems’ shipboard architecture and designed to prosecute several simultaneous engagements without operator vectoring.

Sea Viper has now seen action. In January 2024 HMS Diamond shot down a Houthi one-way attack drone in the Red Sea, the first operational firing of the system, and further Aster engagements were reported by the Royal Navy through 2024 as Type 45s escorted merchant traffic through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. UK Ministry of Defence briefings put the per-round cost of an Aster 30 in the low seven figures, a ratio that has prompted domestic debate about using an area-air-defence interceptor against airframes worth a few thousand dollars and has pushed interest in cheaper companion effectors. The French navy’s FREMM Languedoc used the sibling PAAMS(E) variant against Houthi drones over the Red Sea in December 2023, and Italian Horizon-class frigates have been rotated through the same waters on EU Aspides duty.

Development continues around the Aster 30 Block 1NT and the forthcoming Block 2 BMD, which MBDA and the French, Italian and UK ministries have positioned as Europe’s exo-atmospheric interceptor for the next decade. On the UK side, the Sea Viper Evolution and Power Improvement programmes are refreshing the Sampson sensor chain and the Type 45’s troubled propulsion in parallel, keeping the class in first-line service into the late 2030s.
