The Saber Remote Weapon Station (RWS) is a modular fire-control system developed by the Ukrainian firm Roboneers, which was founded in Kyiv in 2014. Introduced in 2022, the system is designed to mount machine guns, grenade launchers, flamethrowers, and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) on a variety of platforms, including unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), pickup trucks, and fixed defensive positions. The system integrates with Shadow AI targeting software to assist in target acquisition and engagement.
The Saber RWS is available in several configurations, including variants mounting the PKT 7.62 mm machine gun, the M240, the M2 Browning, the MK19(M) grenade launcher, and the K-2, a twin AK-74 setup. The system’s primary value proposition is the ability to operate weapons from a protected, remote location, thereby reducing the risk to personnel. According to user feedback from the front lines, the system allows operators to remain in shelter while engaging targets, even under heavy shelling. The integration of cameras and navigation systems enables precise aiming and target tracking without exposing the operator to direct fire.
Ukrainian forces have been the primary operators of the Saber RWS, deploying it across multiple units in the conflict against Russia. The 56th Motorized Brigade and the 5th Separate Assault Brigade have publicly reported using the system to destroy enemy positions while minimizing risk to their soldiers. The 47th Mechanized Brigade “Magura” and the 25th Airborne Brigade “Sicheslav” have also utilized Roboneers’ broader ecosystem of unmanned systems, which often includes the Saber RWS mounted on platforms like the Lynx UGV. The system has been tested in combat conditions, with operators noting its effectiveness in logistics support and direct fire support roles.
Roboneers has continued to develop and refine the Saber RWS, with recent updates including the codification of the “Saber K-2” turret variant. The company has also sought international partnerships to co-test and scale its multi-domain unmanned systems, including a joint production agreement with German firm ARX Robotics. The Saber RWS represents a shift in Ukrainian defense strategy, emphasizing the use of unmanned and remote systems to enhance survivability and operational efficiency in high-intensity combat environments.
