The Ratel UGV is a tracked unmanned ground vehicle developed by Roboneers, a Ukrainian defense technology firm specializing in remote weapon stations and robotic combat modules. Introduced in 2023, the system is designed for reconnaissance, fire support, and logistics operations in contested terrain. Unlike wheeled platforms such as the company’s Lynx UGV, the Ratel utilizes a tracked chassis to navigate difficult ground conditions, offering a modular weapon mount that allows for flexible armament configurations. The vehicle is operated remotely, enabling soldiers to engage targets or perform logistical tasks from a safe distance, thereby reducing exposure to enemy fire and shelling.

The platform’s design prioritizes modularity and remote operation. While specific internal components are not always detailed in public briefings, the system relies on robust navigation systems and built-in cameras to function in dangerous environments. The remote control interface allows operators to manage the vehicle’s movement and weapon systems without being physically present on the front line. This capability is particularly valued for logistics missions, such as delivering ammunition and evacuating wounded personnel, where the risk of casualty is high. The tracked design is intended to provide superior mobility over rough or muddy terrain compared to wheeled alternatives, although the company has also highlighted the durability of its wheeled models, noting instances where Lynx units continued to operate after sustaining mine damage.

Ukrainian military units have integrated the Ratel and related Roboneers systems into their operational doctrine. The 47th Mechanized Brigade “Magura” has reported using ground robotic complexes for ammunition delivery and casualty evacuation, citing the ability to work in dangerous conditions with minimal risk to personnel. The 56th Motorized Brigade and the 5th Separate Assault Brigade have also utilized Roboneers’ remote weapon systems, such as the Saber RWS, to engage enemies from sheltered positions. The 28th Mechanized Brigade has noted the use of consumer-grade hardware, such as Steam Deck consoles, to control these combat robots, highlighting the practical, low-tech integration of advanced robotics into frontline logistics and combat support. The 59th Brigade has conducted over 100 missions using Lynx platforms, demonstrating the operational tempo at which these systems are being employed.

Roboneers continues to iterate on its product line, expanding its portfolio to include multi-domain systems. The company has engaged in joint production efforts with German firm ARX Robotics to scale the manufacturing of these robotic complexes. While the Ratel specifically is a tracked variant, it sits alongside the wheeled Lynx and the SabLynx combination in the company’s lineup, offering Ukrainian forces a range of options tailored to different tactical needs. The systems are fielded to address the immediate threat of drone warfare and artillery, allowing Ukrainian defenders to maintain logistical lines and provide fire support while minimizing human exposure to direct combat.
