The GATEKEEPER is a passive electro-optical distributed-aperture system designed for surface combatants, developed by Thales Nederland. Introduced in 2015, the system provides 360-degree continuous coverage for automated threat detection and classification, addressing close-in defence and counter-drone threats. It serves as a critical component in anti-air warfare (AAW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW), particularly in littoral environments where mechanical scanning systems may be vulnerable or require excessive maintenance.

The system replaces traditional mechanically rotating radars with an array of six static sensor heads. This configuration incorporates large infrared focal plane arrays, specifically combining Low Wave Infrared (LWIR) cameras with high-resolution color TV cameras. By using static sensors, GATEKEEPER increases the update rate of detections and avoids the heavy maintenance workload associated with mechanical systems. The system relies on dedicated processing algorithms running on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) processing hardware to automatically detect and track fast, agile, and stealthy air threats simultaneously with surface asymmetric threats. This architecture also makes the sensor resistant to electronic jamming. The system is designed to operate day and night, providing situational awareness for ship crews.

The primary operators of the GATEKEEPER system are the Netherlands and Belgium. The Netherlands’ Defence Materiel Organization signed a contract with Thales Nederland for the delivery of GATEKEEPER sensors to be installed on two M-class frigates. Similarly, the Belgian Navy received two GATEKEEPER sensors for its M-class frigates. The system has also been deployed on the Mexican Navy’s POLA (Patrullera Oceanica de Largo Alcance) class vessels, with the first ship, ARM Reformador, launched in late 2018. While the system is active in these navies, specific deployment counts and combat experience records are not publicly documented.

Thales Nederland continues to integrate GATEKEEPER into broader combat systems. In June 2023, Thales signed a contract with the Dutch Command Materiel and IT (COMMIT) to produce and deliver the Above Water Warfare System (AWWS) fire control cluster, which incorporates GATEKEEPER technology. The system remains in active production, though total production numbers are not disclosed. The GATEKEEPER competes with other electro-optical director systems and close-in weapon systems, offering a passive, low-maintenance alternative for modern naval threat detection.
