The EVO Max 4N is a small quadcopter marketed by Autel Robotics as the night-optimised member of its EVO Max 4-series, released in 2023 to sit alongside the thermal-and-zoom EVO Max 4T. It falls into the category of compact commercial-derived intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms — the same class of sub-two-kilogram folding quadcopter that Autel’s larger rival DJI has made a fixture of both civilian and military use over the last decade. Autel positions the 4N specifically for after-dark ISR, search-and-rescue and public-safety work where a thermal-only sensor gives too little context to identify what the operator is looking at.
The distinguishing element is the gimbal payload. Autel describes it as pairing a “starlight” ultra-low-light CMOS camera — a large-format sensor tuned to gather usable colour imagery under near-dark conditions — with a 640×512 uncooled thermal sensor and a laser rangefinder, letting an operator switch between low-light visible and thermal channels on the same target. The airframe carries omnidirectional obstacle sensing, a visual-inertial positioning system that Autel says allows flight without GPS, and the company’s A-Mesh peer-to-peer link between airframes and controllers. Endurance is quoted at roughly 42 minutes per battery, with the SkyLink 3.0 datalink advertised at up to 20 km line-of-sight range. Beyond the manufacturer’s own material, independent verification of these figures in tactical use is thin.
Operator information is where the picture becomes harder to pin down. Autel is a Shenzhen-based firm and DJI’s principal domestic Chinese competitor, and in 2024 the US Department of Defense added the company to its 1260H list of “Chinese military companies” operating in the United States — a designation Autel has disputed. Reporting from the war in Ukraine has described both Ukrainian and Russian units fielding Autel EVO-series drones as alternatives to, or alongside, DJI equipment, though numbers and unit-level assignments have not been independently confirmed. No public defence contract values for the 4N specifically have been disclosed.
The 4N sits inside a broader 4-series that also includes the 4T thermal/zoom variant and later 4D dual-optic models, all sharing the same airframe, controller and mesh-networking stack. Its niche within that lineup — a starlight-plus-thermal sensor block on an otherwise standard compact quadcopter — is a comparatively unusual combination among Western consumer-grade ISR drones of similar size, most of which still ship thermal paired with daytime-only colour imagery.
