The DeltaQuad Pro is a fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by DeltaQuad, with production and avionics integration handled by VDL Defentec at its facility in Born, Netherlands. Introduced in 2019, the system is designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, offering a modular platform capable of carrying electro-optical and infrared (EO-IR) payloads. The aircraft features a wingspan of approximately 230 cm and a maximum take-off weight of roughly 6.5 kg, allowing it to remain airborne for up to four hours with a range of up to 100 km, although the manufacturer’s newer Evo variant claims extended capabilities of up to eight hours and 500 km.
The DeltaQuad Pro operates as an electric, autonomous system, utilizing fully autonomous waypoint flight for its missions. Its design emphasizes modularity, enabling the integration of various sensors, including high-resolution cameras for day and night observation. The production infrastructure at VDL Defentec is equipped with advanced assembly lines adaptable to complex electromechanical systems, allowing for rapid implementation of design changes to meet evolving tactical requirements. This flexibility is intended to ensure the drone remains aligned with emerging threats on the battlefield. The system is powered by electric propulsion, contributing to its low acoustic signature and extended endurance relative to its size.
The primary operator of the DeltaQuad Pro is the Netherlands, which has integrated the system into its defence capabilities in response to calls to strengthen domestic manufacturing. In a strategic partnership announced to expand production capacity, DeltaQuad and VDL Groep have committed to scaling output to meet rising demand from national and international defence partners. This collaboration supports the Dutch government’s objective to bolster the domestic defence industrial base. The drone has been reported to have seen operational use in Ukraine, where it has been described as battlefield-proven and internationally recognised for its operational effectiveness. However, specific combat statistics, contract values, and detailed deployment numbers are not publicly verified in available sources.
The DeltaQuad Pro represents a shift toward domestically produced, electric VTOL ISR assets in Europe, addressing the need for resilient supply chains and adaptable surveillance technology. By leveraging VDL Defentec’s manufacturing expertise, DeltaQuad aims to provide a scalable solution for armed forces and governments seeking reliable, long-endurance UAVs. The system’s ability to operate autonomously and carry diverse payloads makes it suitable for a range of security and defence applications, from border surveillance to tactical reconnaissance. As production scales, the DeltaQuad Pro is positioned to compete with other fixed-wing VTOL systems in the global market, offering a European-made alternative for nations looking to enhance their unmanned aerial capabilities.
