Terma’s C-Guard is a naval decoy launching system designed to provide self-protection for warships against incoming anti-ship missiles and torpedoes. Introduced in 2019 with the launch of the C-Guard MK II, the system represents a significant upgrade to Terma’s earlier decoy technologies, incorporating advanced AI-developed algorithms to enhance threat detection and response times. The system is classified as a soft-kill solution, meaning it defeats threats by confusing or diverting their guidance systems rather than destroying them with kinetic force. This approach allows naval vessels to preserve their limited hard-kill interceptors for more critical engagements.
The C-Guard MK II is a round-agnostic system, capable of launching various types of decoys depending on the threat profile. For radar-guided missiles, the system deploys chaff, which consists of small pieces of aluminum or lightweight materials that create a cloud of reflective particles. This cloud seduces incoming radar-guided missiles, causing them to miss their intended target. For infrared-guided threats, C-Guard launches flares that emit intense heat, creating a temporary diversion that draws heat-seeking missiles away from the ship. Additionally, the system incorporates acoustic countermeasures to counter underwater threats such as torpedoes. These countermeasures use jamming and false acoustic signals to confuse torpedo guidance systems, absorbing the torpedo’s energy and neutralizing the attack. The system’s modular architecture allows for dynamic aiming and rapid deployment of decoys, ensuring precise and timely defense against coordinated attacks.
C-Guard is widely fielded across NATO and allied navies, with more than 150 systems in operation worldwide. Denmark is a notable operator, utilizing the system to protect its naval assets. The system’s effectiveness has been demonstrated in various operational contexts, though specific combat records are not publicly detailed. The C-Guard MK II’s ability to integrate with a vessel’s Combat Management System (CMS) allows for seamless coordination with other defensive systems, enhancing overall fleet survivability. The system’s decoy-agnostic design also provides logistical flexibility, allowing navies to choose from various decoy suppliers and reduce dependency on single sources.
The development of C-Guard MK II reflects the growing complexity of maritime threats, including advanced anti-ship missiles and electronic warfare capabilities. Terma’s integration of AI-enhanced algorithms and deep CMS integration underscores the system’s focus on speed and precision. The system’s future-ready design ensures it can adapt to emerging threats, including unmanned killer drones, maintaining its relevance in modern naval defense strategies. C-Guard’s comprehensive approach to soft-kill defense makes it a critical component of layered naval protection, offering cost-efficiency and operational flexibility in high-stakes environments.
