The Arrow 3 is an exoatmospheric anti-ballistic missile interceptor developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Boeing. Jointly funded and overseen by the Israeli Ministry of Defense’s Homa administration and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, the system entered service in 2017 as the upper-tier component of Israel’s multi-layered missile defense architecture. Designed to engage threats during the space-flight portion of their trajectory, the Arrow 3 intercepts ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), before they re-enter the atmosphere. This capability allows it to neutralize warheads carrying nuclear, chemical, biological, or conventional payloads in the vacuum of space, thereby preventing radioactive or toxic debris from falling on populated areas.

The interceptor is a two-stage rocket capable of reaching altitudes above 100 kilometers. It utilizes inertial navigation systems and a gimbaled seeker for guidance, with thrust vectoring providing steering control. A key technical feature is its divert motor, which enables the kill vehicle to execute dramatic directional changes mid-flight to ensure a hit-to-kill interception. The system’s sensors can pivot 90 degrees, a design choice that has led the chairman of the Israeli Space Agency to note its potential adaptation for anti-satellite roles, which would make Israel one of the few nations capable of destroying orbiting satellites. The missile is launched from rapid-launch fortified underground silos and has a reported range of up to 2,400 kilometers.

Israel and Germany are the primary operators of the Arrow 3 system. The interceptor has seen combat deployment in several conflicts, including the 2024 Iran–Israel conflict, the Red Sea crisis, and the Twelve-Day War. Its operational history includes launches during Operation Rising Lion in 2025, demonstrating its role in active defense scenarios against regional threats. The system’s ability to engage threats at higher altitudes and earlier in their flight path than previous interceptors provides a strategic advantage in countering long-range ballistic missiles.

Development of the Arrow 3 began in August 2008, following a decade-long partnership between IAI and Boeing. The first flight test occurred in 2013, with subsequent tests confirming the system’s reliability and performance. The second flight test, completed in January 2014, marked a significant milestone in the program, validating the interceptor’s ability to enhance Israel’s national missile defense strategy. The system’s success has reinforced the strategic cooperation between Israel and the United States in the field of missile defense.
