The APELLA automated multifunctional communication intelligence (COMINT) complex is a radio monitoring and signals intelligence system developed by the Ukrainian firm Infozahyst. Introduced in 2021, the system is designed to assess the electromagnetic environment, detect radio emissions, and perform rapid analysis of intercepted signals. It operates within a frequency range of 25 to 6000 MHz, covering VHF and UHF bands commonly used for tactical military communications. The system features two independent processing channels, with an optional four-channel configuration, allowing for simultaneous monitoring of multiple frequency bands. Each channel provides a real-time bandwidth of 20 MHz and maintains a single frequency dynamic range of over 80 dB, enabling the detection of weak signals amidst strong interference.
APELLA is engineered to handle complex signal environments, including frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) networks. The system can search, detect, recombine, and demodulate up to eight FHSS networks simultaneously. It is capable of decoding more than 50 types of signals and intercepting drone control and data transmission channels. The software interface is described as adaptive and intuitive, supporting 24/7 operation in both stationary and mobile configurations. The hardware is housed in a ruggedized case designed for harsh field conditions. While the manufacturer does not publicly disclose the specific open-source libraries or flight stacks used in the base APELLA unit, the system is part of a broader ecosystem of Ukrainian SIGINT tools that often integrate with standard data processing pipelines.
The APELLA complex is primarily fielded by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is integrated into the KHORTYTSIA-M mobile COMINT complex, a larger system that has been delivered under State Defence Orders since 2018. This integration allows Ukrainian forces to deploy the APELLA’s capabilities in mobile tactical environments, providing real-time transmission of radio signals and direction-finding data. The system’s ability to monitor drone communications and decode tactical radio traffic makes it a critical asset for electronic warfare and intelligence gathering on the front lines. Infozahyst, the Kyiv-based developer, has established a portfolio of SIGINT and electronic warfare systems, including the Plastun signals-intelligence suite and the Minerva wideband receiver, positioning APELLA as a specialized component within their broader defensive technology offerings.
The system’s combat experience is tied to its deployment in the ongoing conflict with Russia. By intercepting and analyzing enemy communications, APELLA supports Ukrainian command and control structures in identifying adversary positions and movements. The manufacturer highlights the system’s role in the detection and demodulation of drone signals, a capability that has become increasingly vital as unmanned aerial systems play a larger role in modern warfare. The integration of APELLA into the KHORTYTSIA-M platform ensures that these capabilities are available to units operating in dynamic and contested electromagnetic environments.
