ALIAS, short for Aircrew Labor In-cockpit Automation System, is a DARPA-funded retrofit kit designed to give existing manned aircraft a path to autonomous or reduced-crew operation. DARPA launched the programme in 2014 and awarded Phase 1 contracts the following year, with Aurora Flight Sciences and Sikorsky emerging as the primary contractors and continuing through the later phases. The premise is straightforward: swapping to a purpose-built autonomous aircraft is expensive and slow, so ALIAS instead installs into airframes an operator already owns.
The system’s technical approach mixes physical actuation with digital integration. Aurora’s configuration places a portable autonomy core in the right seat and flies the aircraft through a combination of a robotic actuator that manipulates the physical controls, a machine-vision system that reads cockpit instruments, and taps into onboard data buses where those exist. Autonomy logic handles take-off, cruise, approach and landing, along with contingency handling for events such as engine failure, and a tablet interface lets a single pilot or a ground operator issue high-level commands rather than hand-fly the aircraft. Aurora has stated the kit is designed to install in about a month and to be portable between airframes; the programme has moved a common core between a Diamond DA42 light twin and a Cessna 208 Caravan during development.
The most visible demonstrator is Sikorsky’s Matrix-branded variant fielded on the UH-60A Black Hawk. In February 2022 the aircraft flew a 30-minute uncrewed flight over Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and later that year performed an uncrewed logistics run for the US Army carrying a simulated blood-resupply payload and a sling load. Aurora’s own line has centred on fixed-wing platforms, with a Cessna Caravan making autonomous flights from 2018 onward. The customer set has been almost entirely American, with the US Army, the US Air Force and DARPA itself funding successive phases; no export sales have been publicly disclosed.
Development is ongoing rather than closed out. Sikorsky, part of Lockheed Martin since 2015, has continued to refine Matrix with an eye on optionally crewed rotorcraft including the CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter. Aurora, acquired by Boeing in 2017, has folded ALIAS work into its broader autonomy portfolio. The system sits alongside other retrofit-autonomy efforts such as Reliable Robotics’ remotely piloted Caravan, but is distinct in being explicitly designed to move between airframes rather than being tightly integrated with any one of them.
