US Air Force pursues combined-cycle rotating detonation engine for high-speed affordable mass munitions

Published

The US Air Force is funding development of a Combined Cycle Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE-CC) under the High-Speed Affordable Mass Munitions (HAMM) programme. The engine is designed to switch between rocket and air-breathing propulsion modes, aiming to improve fuel efficiency and reduce unit cost for future high-speed strike weapons. The programme timeline allows 36–48 months to advance from laboratory concept validation to prototype testing under near-operational conditions.
