Published 7 October 2026

Rybar reports that the Aframax Rio — a Liberian-flagged crude tanker carrying oil from Novorossiysk to India — was struck and set alight on the evening of 6 October in neutral Black Sea waters near Sochi. Preliminary attribution is to unmanned surface vessels, with a UAV attack also cited as possible. The captain requested evacuation for 23 crew. Rybar counts the incident as the third Black Sea shipping attack within 24 hours, with separate strikes reported near Bulgarian waters.
