Ukrainian FPV copter downs S-300V launcher; Russian air-defense gaps exposed

Published

In early July Ukrainian forces destroyed an S-300V surface-to-air missile launcher using a copter-type FPV drone — the first confirmed such kill, according to analyst Dmitry Putyata (Kriegsforscher) reported via Victory Drones. Putyata describes Russia’s intended layered air-defense architecture as: small drone-detection radars in two echelons up to 20 km from the front line, followed by EW systems, observation posts with machine guns, mobile fire groups, and FPV interceptor teams. In this case those defences were either absent or poorly executed, allowing a low-cost FPV to reach one of Russia’s most capable and hardest-to-replace SAM systems. Putyata draws a direct lesson for NATO: critical, irreplaceable SAM systems require dedicated close-in protection that the current Russian model failed to provide.
