UK-Estonian consortium arms USV with containerized mini-SAM at Farnborough 2026

Published

At Farnborough International Airshow, Babcock (UK), ACUA Ocean Technologies (UK) and Estonian startup Frankenburg Technologies signed an agreement to integrate Frankenburg’s Mark I mini-SAM missiles into an unmanned surface vessel via a Babcock-developed containerised sea-launch system. The arrangement would give a USV organic air-defence capability — suitable for screening USV formations or extending maritime AD coverage without crewed hulls. A Russian engineering blogger noted separately that Ukrainian forces have already been observed using compact, inexpensive USVs as sea-based interceptor-UAV platforms, placing an AD layer well offshore within range of coastal radar but away from populated areas.
