UK-built Nyan OWE confirmed in Ukraine deep-strike role against Russia

Published

A Sunday Times investigation, corroborated by multiple Russian milblogger channels, confirms British-made one-way-effector drones have been used in Ukrainian strikes against Russian industrial and military targets for at least six months. The Nyan OWE, manufactured by Callen-Lenz (a BAE Systems subsidiary) in Wiltshire, carries a manufacturer-stated range above 240 km and a unit cost below $100,000; Ukrainian military sources confirmed its use, with targets including Volgograd and Yaroslavl oil refineries, naval bases, and logistics nodes. A second British manufacturer’s system with approximately 965 km range is described but withheld by name for operational security. Russian analysis (Rybar) disputes that Nyan’s 240 km reach is sufficient for the refinery strikes, suggesting it was used primarily to saturate near-border air defences and open corridors for longer-range Ukrainian systems; the channel notes Nyan-type drones were already being recovered by Russian forces in mid-2025.
