Starlink V5 Gen4 terminal drops GNSS module; aperture halved vs rev4

Published

SpaceX’s new Starlink V5 terminal (firmware rev5_pez_prod2, colloquially Gen4) contains no on-board GNSS receiver — timing and positioning are derived from satellite signal data rather than a dedicated chipset. The antenna uses 820 phased-array elements and two beamformers versus rev4’s 1,536 elements and three beamformers, with roughly half the aperture area (approximately 959 cm² versus 1,949 cm²). Average power draw is 35–50 W. The removal of a dedicated GNSS module has practical implications for military users who have relied on the terminal for supplementary positioning data alongside communications.
