South Korea reveals Cheongwang Block 2 mobile laser and 100 kW towed interceptor

Published

South Korea publicly demonstrated two new directed-energy prototypes at its 78th Armed Forces Day on 1 October: the Cheongwang Block 2, mounted on an armoured 8×8 wheeled chassis for mobile operations, and a 100 kW towed high-energy laser designed to intercept incoming missiles, artillery rounds and mortar bombs. The stationary Cheongwang Block 1 (20 kW), in service since late 2024, was used during the demonstration to down two targets. Seoul has not disclosed the development stage or service-entry timeline for either new prototype.
