Second Ukrainian MiG-29 lost to missile self-detonation intercepting a Geran drone

Published

A Ukrainian MiG-29 crashed in Odessa region on August 10 after an air-to-air missile self-detonated during an attempt to intercept a Geran drone; the pilot ejected safely. Russian and Ukrainian sources both note a near-identical incident in Poltava region in late June. Two similar events within six weeks point to a recurring proximity-fuze problem when standard AAMs engage very slow, low-flying UAV targets at minimal separation — a pattern consistent with Ukraine’s parallel move toward cannon interception by F-16s.
