Sea Baby near Yalta assessed as recon-by-combat to probe coastal defence range

Published · updated

A Russian naval analyst argues the Sea Baby drone-carrier USV’s approach to Yalta was a deliberate reconnaissance-by-combat mission: Ukraine needed to determine the standoff range at which Russian coastal defences would engage and destroy such a platform before planning follow-on operations. Future employment roles identified for a carrier USV include providing fire support during commando (DRG) landings, neutralising coastal observation posts and sensor nodes, and striking port infrastructure. The analysis also notes that FPV drone propagation over open water is substantially better than over land, extending effective strike reach from a seaborne launch platform.
