Russian teams achieve GPS-free drone navigation at 17 m accuracy via onboard map-matching

Published

Two Russian teams demonstrated fully autonomous GNSS-independent drone navigation at the NTI Up Great ‘Autonomous Search’ competition in Vladimir region, targeting forest search operations where satellite signals are unreliable. The leading approach (LIBS team, HSE MIEM and Kognitiva) matches live camera and thermal-imager frames against a pre-loaded satellite image database stored onboard, eliminating cumulative drift with zero operator course corrections. Average positional error across 3–5 km day-and-night flights was 17.65 m against a 100 m acceptance threshold.
