Russian Navy forms unmanned surface vessel regiments; 500-tonne ASW USV under discussion

Published

Navy Commander-in-Chief Moiseev stated in a published interview that the Russian fleet is establishing dedicated unmanned surface vessel regiments. He also floated the concept of a 500-tonne unmanned ship designed for anti-submarine warfare — a platform comparable in size to Soviet Project 1234 small missile ships. Russian naval commentary welcomed the direction but cautioned that large unmanned ASW platforms are a second-order capability that should follow, not precede, demonstrated mastery of smaller-scale USV operations.
