Russian Kosmos satellites manoeuvre to shadow Finnish ICEYE SAR imaging satellite

Published

Following the April 2026 launch of six Kosmos-series military satellites (2609–2614) from Plesetsk on a Soyuz-2.1b rocket, at least four of them (2610–2613) manoeuvred between 14 and 20 May to match the orbital plane of Finland’s ICEYE-X36 SAR satellite at approximately 547 km altitude. Open-source analysis describes the fuel expenditure as substantial, implying a deliberate purpose. ICEYE-X36 is part of a 50+ satellite constellation providing all-weather, day-night radar imaging at sub-metre resolution — a key targeting and battle-damage-assessment resource for Ukrainian and NATO forces.
