Russian analysts propose UTS-800 turboprop trainer as low-cost counter-drone patrol aircraft

Published

Two Russian defence-industry channels argue that the domestic UTS-800 turboprop — described as nearing serial production with its own engine — could be converted into a light drone-intercept patrol aircraft through modest modifications: ceramic frontal armour, armoured glass, and anti-drone ordnance, following the Tucano conversion model. The Yak-130 jet trainer is also under discussion for the same role but is assessed as hampered by engine-supply problems (its Zaporizhzhia-made powerplants require domestic substitutes) and short loiter endurance. Both analysts frame cheap dedicated counter-drone aircraft as the only cost-effective answer to border defence against advancing Ukrainian and NATO fixed-wing drones, noting that fighter employment is disproportionately expensive for the threat.
