Russia validates 5G NTN relay from stratostrat at 17 km altitude over 80-minute session

Published

Russian engineers have demonstrated a 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks link from the unmanned ‘Barrazh-1’ stratostrat balloon at 17 km altitude — a platform rated for up to 20 km and 100 kg payload — sustaining a 2K video stream to a ground control station for more than 80 minutes. The test, conducted in conditions of stratospheric temperature and atmospheric pressure, validates the HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station) concept as a pseudo-satellite communications node. Integrated with drone C2 links, such a relay would offer substantially greater area coverage and lower signal latency than orbital assets.
