Russia's 'Geroi Tumana' USV completes 169 km fully autonomous Barents Sea transit

Published

On 1 September 2026, Russia’s unmanned surface vessel under the ‘Geroi Tumana’ project completed a 169 km autonomous transit from Liinakhamari to Ura-Guba in the Barents Sea in six hours with no operator input — claimed to be the first fully uncrewed surface vessel run above the Arctic Circle. Mission objectives included autonomous navigation through varied weather, border-zone video surveillance, coastal survey and radio-spectrum monitoring. The vessel is reportedly entering preparation for unmanned cargo delivery operations in the Barents Sea.
