Russia reveals S-8VTs radar-guided helicopter rocket for autonomous drone interception

Published

Russia has disclosed the S-8VTs, an 80 mm radar-guided rocket adapted from the standard S-8 unguided family for helicopter-borne drone interception. Developed by JSC Zaslon, the weapon uses the launching helicopter’s own radar for guidance and carries a programmable-fuze HE-fragmentation warhead effective from 400 to 4,000 m; cleared platforms are the Ka-52M, Mi-8AMTSH-V and Ka-29, each requiring a radar and launch-pod upgrade. A separate variant with an onboard radar seeker (RGSN) was also developed for fully autonomous post-launch target acquisition without a maintained datalink, effectively making it an air-to-air missile. Russian analysts assess EW jamming of the datalink channel at close range and direct line-of-sight as largely impractical in operational conditions.
