RUSI proposes dedicated multinational NATO armed training-jet squadron for drone intercept

Published

A researcher linked to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has proposed a dedicated multinational NATO squadron of armed jet trainers to intercept Russian UAVs entering alliance airspace, conserving front-line fighters and scarce air-to-air missiles. A parallel branch of the concept focuses on militarising turboprop agricultural aircraft platforms — the Air Tractor family is already mass-produced commercially — for the same interceptor role. Russian drone analysts note that both NATO and Russian planners appear to be converging on the same doctrine: cheaper dedicated interceptor platforms are more cost-sustainable against low-cost drone swarms than full-capability fighters.
