AutoWarCom USV cluster operational at Guantanamo; Hegseth launches 120-day Project Meridian warfare study

SOUTHCOM has stood up its first unmanned surface vessel operating base at Guantanamo Bay as the inaugural installation of the new Autonomous Warfare Command (SAWC), with systems already supporting JTF Western Hemisphere counter-narcotics operations, according to a Ukrainian channel citing SOUTHCOM’s own X posts. Russian analysts note that Hegseth’s 30 September Quantico speech also launched ‘Project Meridian’, a 120-day study of future warfare led by the Pentagon’s Chief Technology Officer with three external co-chairs — framed as an acknowledgement that the best forecasters of future conflict are not confined inside the DoD.
