GPS-free autonomous drones inherit sensor-trust attack surface via visual nav pipelines, engineers warn

Published

A Ukrainian engineering channel applies published AI safety analysis to military autonomous platforms, arguing that drones and USVs using GPS-free navigation via PX4 or ArduPilot external visual-odometry feeds, or ROS 2 / YOLO object-detection pipelines, expose a sensor-level attack surface. A compromised onboard computer can push corrupted position or detection outputs that influence vehicle movement even when direct command authority is limited; the degree of influence depends on the platform’s architecture and the cross-validation checks it implements. The risk is assessed as most acute for USVs relying entirely on local visual navigation, where the trust chain is concentrated in a single sensor path.
