Field assessment: lasers defeat plastic-frame drones, fail against composites

Published

A Russian practitioner with front-line experience reports that laser weapons perform very differently depending on airframe material. LDPE-plastic drones such as the Maia type are cut through easily, as are multirotor propellers and battery packs, but drones with dense fiberglass or carbon-fabric outer skins — including the Lyuty, which uses foam interior with fabric cladding — resist laser damage effectively. All heavy composite-framed systems, including the Geran family, are assessed as laser-immune. The same practitioner argues that lasers cannot serve as a primary counter-drone layer and calls for large numbers of interceptor drones fitted with proximity warheads as the more cost-effective solution.
