EU proposes redirecting €21 billion in unspent defence credits to drone procurement for Ukraine

At a closed EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels, European Commission President von der Leyen proposed redirecting €21 billion in unspent EU defence loan credits specifically to drone procurement for Ukraine, as part of discussions on covering Kyiv’s projected €70 billion 2027 budget shortfall. Leaders tasked the Commission with preparing funding options by end of November. If approved, the allocation would represent a structural shift from ad-hoc military aid toward dedicated industrial-scale drone acquisition.
