DPRK demonstrates 10-round KN-25 salvo at 250 km; cluster warheads for tactical ballistic missiles adopted

Published

North Korea demonstrated its KN-25 600mm super-large rocket system — which Pyongyang designates ‘Sniper’ — firing approximately ten rounds from the Wonsan area on 29 October, assessed by South Korea as short-range ballistic missiles travelling roughly 250 km. The system has demonstrated an 18-round salvo in 2024; its stated maximum range is 400 km on an 8.2m rocket. The mass-salvo design creates simultaneous multi-target demands on opposing air defences. Separately, DPRK state media announced completion of tests for a ‘Type 2’ standard cluster warhead for tactical ballistic missiles, covering 12–13 hectares per shot; four warhead types (standard and specialised) are reported in service, with all units to receive full warhead-selection capability by year end. Ukrainian channel Istoria Zbroi notes reports of Russian interest in acquiring the KN-25 system.
