Photographs circulating online show the Chinese Type 08 8×8 IFV fitted with a laser system declared for short-range counter-drone air defence. A Russian military engineer estimates the output at roughly 10 kW — constrained by vehicle volume and onboard power — placing effective engagement range at 700–1,000 m with up to 20 seconds required per kill. The analyst assesses it as the first integration of laser weaponry as a self-defence measure in an IFV, useful for complicating enemy reconnaissance drone operations or reducing small strike-drone attrition in an armoured group operating together, while noting the power level falls well short of what longer-range efficacy would require.
