Ukrainian EW specialist Serhii Beskrestnov (Flash) warns that mass Russian deployment of the ‘Susanin’ optical terrain-following navigation module on Geran-5 and comparable platforms during night operations would force Ukraine to reimpose road and highway lighting blackouts — a measure applied reflexively in 2022 but that would now need to be a deliberate policy response. The Susanin module uses terrain imagery for GPS-independent navigation; Beskrestnov also notes that Russia has already developed a counter-plan for the scenario in which Ukraine itself shifts to visual terrain-navigation on its own drone fleet.
