AeroVironment and Leonardo DRS are developing the 30 kW LOCUST X3 directed-energy system designed to defeat Group 1–3 tactical UAVs without conventional ammunition. It is promoted as a low-cost-per-intercept complement to missile-based air defences; effectiveness depends on weather conditions, atmospheric clarity and available electrical power.
