Ukraine modifies Kub launchers with Buk fire control for drone engagement

Bottom line

Footage indicates Ukrainian forces are modifying Soviet-era Kub (2K12M1-2D Quadrad-2D) launchers by integrating Buk fire control units, creating a hybrid system designed to enhance target engagement against drones and low-flying aircraft.

Why it matters

This improvisation demonstrates Ukraine's ability to rapidly adapt legacy air defense systems to counter modern drone threats, potentially creating a cost-effective layer of air defense that could be replicated or countered by Russian EW units.

Visual evidence from the Ukrainian 156th SAM Regiment shows the deployment of modified Kub (2K12M1-2D Quadrad-2D) launchers. Reports indicate that these launchers are being paired with Buk fire control units within a single circuit. This modification aims to leverage the mobility of the Kub chassis while utilizing the more advanced tracking and engagement capabilities of the Buk system, potentially improving the effectiveness of Soviet-era assets against modern drone threats.
