Russian naval drones attack Aframax tanker near Sochi

Bottom line

Russian and Ukrainian sources confirm an unmanned boat attack on the Aframax tanker 'Rio' near Sochi, causing fire and evacuation of crew.

Why it matters

Demonstrates the capability and willingness of Ukrainian forces to use naval drones to disrupt commercial shipping and energy logistics in the Black Sea, even in close proximity to Russian infrastructure, posing a risk to NATO maritime interests in the region.

Multiple sources, including Russian milbloggers (Rybar, RVvoenkor) and Ukrainian analysts (Podolyak), report that an unmanned boat attacked the Aframax tanker ‘Rio’ (Liberian flag, Indian cargo) in the Black Sea near Sochi on October 6. The attack resulted in a medium-strength explosion, fire, and the evacuation of the 23-person crew. Eyewitnesses and beach closures in Sirius confirm the incident. This marks a significant escalation in the use of naval drones against commercial shipping in Russian-controlled waters.
