Russian snipers and mobile units trained to shoot down drones with small arms

Bottom line

Russian forces are training snipers and mobile air defense units to shoot down small drones using rifles, shotguns, and machine guns, claiming high kill rates.

Why it matters

Allied forces should expect increased use of small arms and improvised kinetic methods against drones, potentially reducing reliance on expensive missile systems for low-altitude threats.

Russian Eastern Grouping of Forces MOGs now include snipers to shoot down small drones, with Commander ‘Maga’ claiming 500+ kills, including many drones, using lead-time aiming. Additionally, Russian ‘West’ group trains mobile air defense units to shoot down drones with rifles, shotguns, and machine guns, emphasizing speed and surprise tactics. These efforts complement existing FPV counter-drone systems, suggesting a shift toward low-cost, kinetic counter-UAS measures across multiple Russian formations.
