Russian MoD claims F-16 intercepted Geran-5 with cannon

Bottom line

Ukrainian sources confirm F-16s successfully shoot down Russian Geran-5 loitering munitions using M61 Vulcan cannons, validating kinetic interception against high-speed jet drones.

Why it matters

Confirms F-16s can effectively engage high-speed jet drones with cannons, expanding NATO air defense options against advanced loitering munitions.

Multiple Ukrainian sources, including WarTranslated, Tsaplienko, and ButusovPlus, report and provide video evidence of F-16 fighters intercepting Russian Geran-5 (jet-powered Shahed) drones using M61 Vulcan cannon fire. These reports corroborate the Russian MoD’s earlier claim of such an interception, confirming the technical feasibility of using kinetic air-to-air weapons against fast-moving, jet-propelled loitering munitions. The successful interception highlights the F-16’s versatility in counter-UAV roles beyond missile engagement.
