Mexican cartels recruit Ukrainian drone operators

Bottom line

Washington Post reports Mexican cartels are recruiting Ukrainian veterans, especially Colombians, to train drone operators for surveillance and smuggling.

Why it matters

The proliferation of Ukrainian-trained drone operators to Mexican cartels could enhance their surveillance and operational capabilities, posing a new security challenge for US and regional forces.

The Washington Post reports that Mexican cartels are recruiting Ukrainian veterans, particularly those of Colombian descent, to train drone operators for surveillance and smuggling route planning. The US State Department is discussing the risks with Kyiv, and the US has deployed laser counter-drone systems in response. This marks a significant expansion of Ukrainian drone expertise into non-state actor networks in the Western Hemisphere.
